Accessibility Services in Post-Secondary Institutions – Part Two

Last month we discussed the eligibility requirements and application process for potential students who use or intend on using Accessibility Services. For part two of this posting we will let you know what comes after the initial application process and give you some insight into the types of services and accommodations are generally offered to students using Accessibility Services.

What do I do after I have applied to the school?

First thing: make sure you are registered with Accessibility Services and make sure they have all the required documentation. Once that is in order you will meet with an Advisor to discuss the academic accommodation process specific to that school.

Once you are registered in your classes, you may be required to communicate with all of your professors to discuss any accommodations you will need throughout the semester.


What kinds of services are available for people with disabilities?Image result for direction

Most post-secondary institutions offer an abundance of services that will help make the transition easier, including:

  1. Information for students transitioning from high school or transferring from another institution
  2. Assessment of needs based on documentation of disability
  3. Assistance with applying for “Canada Student Loan for Students with Permanent Disabilities” grants
  4. Academic accommodation memos for Professors
  5. Accommodated exams
  6. Assistive technology assessment and supports
  7. Access supports coordination (note-takers, scribes, strategists, sign language interpreters)
  8. Information about campus accessibility (physical access)
  9. Information about and referral to other student service

These accommodations and services are intended to remove barriers to leaning, allow access to course information, enable the student to demonstrate mastery of the course content, and ‘level the playing field’ while still maintaining the academic standards and objectives of the courses. These services are based no each person’s unique needs and on the course requirements.

In general, anywhere between 8-12% of a post-secondary’s student body are students who use Accessibility Services. Sharing information about accessing this resource is key for removing barriers and supporting all students in post-secondary settings. Make sure to plan ahead to learn more about he services at your institution!
