Adults Who Changed Careers

Great people, great office environment, great course materials and tests. Great professional counselor who approached me individually. Rebecca was always helping me by listening, asking supportive questions, and letting me come to important conclusions about myself (self-reflecting), about my experience, and my character. She supported me during the entire process and she is still supporting me now to keep me going further. And she always answered all my questions, even the questions that are not directly related to the program but were interesting to me. I always was motivated and never felt alone. Great thanks to her!

– Artem, Age 31

The Calgary Career Counselling environment was such a friendly, professional, welcoming, and helpful place to seek and find guidance about my career. I was able to get clarity on my career objectives and that clarity helped to shape my career decisions and gain insight into my personal life as well. It was an incredibly enjoyable and effective experience.

It was a pleasure to work with Michelle on my resume format and networking strategies for my career applications. I found Michelle to be very current and knowledgeable in those areas, providing practical advice to applying within today’s job market. The discussions we had were very interactive and she had done a great job leading me to my own conclusions and decisions for advancing my resume writing and networking skills.

Thank you to Calgary Counselling and Colleen Lucas in helping me determine my career direction.

I had a mid-life, mid-career crisis. I hated everything about my job and felt I had no more options, but was in despair because I didn’t know what else I could do. After speaking with Colleen, and doing the exercises in my workbook, I realized I didn’t hate my chosen profession. It was just a matter of realigning with my values, and rebalancing my work/life. I found a great job with a great company and this process gave me the confidence and affirmation to take the next step. Thanks Calgary Career Counsellors!!

Calgary Career Counselling was an important stepping stone in my career transition.  Using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, I was able to learn more about my personality and see why some careers worked for me, while others simply did not. It was really interesting (and relieving) to see that there are so many other ENFPs who share my interests and aptitudes. Without CCC, I would not have taken the MBTI test, and would not have had the opportunity to work with someone as talented, professional, and genuinely invested in my journey as Dr. Laura Hambley is.  I was comfortable at CCC from the moment I was greeted and offered a tea or a latte, and was confident as I took my last steps out the door headed toward my new career.

I came to see Avra after having graduated from university and having been in the workforce for a few years. I have undertaken career planning in the past but have never felt so excited about moving forward in a new direction. Working with Avra was very collaborative, which allowed us to come to a new direction for me that is realistic and attainable. Avra was very patient, supportive and encouraging throughout the process. Given the amount of time we spend at our jobs, I would highly recommend Calgary Career Counselling to define a clear direction that you can get excited about.

I highly recommend the services of Calgary Career Counselling. Their process is invaluable and I would advise anyone stuck in a career rut to give them a call. I would especially suggest any young person prior to attending any post-secondary education to get a hold of CCC. To truly understand from early on what career path would be best will save you a tremendous amount of time, money and emotional energy.

Laura’s program stages are the best I’ve seen and I wish I had access to this type of detailed counselling 20 years ago.

After my program with Laura, I finally decided to head back to school and complete the MBA program that I’ve always wanted to do. It was time to pull the trigger and thanks to Laura I’m able to fulfill a life’s long dream.

Yours truly,

-John T., Age 42

Working with Avra was both effective and enjoyable. I found her to be a great listener, who customized the process to my needs, was helpful when I was stuck, and guided me to useful insights while allowing me to come to my own conclusions. Since my sessions with Avra, I have found work at a new job in my chosen field. Everyone I encountered at Calgary Career Counselling has been wonderful. Thanks Avra!

For the past couple of years I have been pretty confused about my career direction. After 20+ years in IT and a short stint at being self-employed, I felt I needed to take stock, find out what it is I really like to do, and plan the next 15 years or so of my work life. Working with Laura was instrumental in gaining that insight and as a result I have a great role doing exactly what I wanted. I would recommend working with Laura to anyone who is looking for something more from their career!

Post-Secondary Students Who Switched Career Paths

I had career counselling with Laura when I was unhappy with my University Major, but at that time, I was unsure of what I wanted to get into. Her program really helped me; through a process of testing and exercises I was able to figure out the right choice for me. She even helped me figure out the exact path within the field I wanted to take, and what I needed to do to get there. Since the counselling, I have become exceedingly convinced that I made the right choice, and that my future career is something I am very passionate about. I went from having a major that I was unenthusiastic about, to doing an Honours degree, and loving my classes and research. I would highly recommend career counselling for anyone unsure about what they want to do, and Laura was an excellent counsellor!

Laura’s career counseling helped me immensely. The testing was a revelation and her interpretation took it to the next level. Laura showed me the difference between what I wanted to ‘be’ and what I wanted to do. The combination of our work together, her contacts, and her guidance produced a clear path towards something I know I want.

I wanted to thank you for all of your help over the few months that we chatted and to let you know that I’m following it through. I feel great about my new opportunity at school and what life holds for me after I’ve graduated. Thank you again for all your help and support.

High School Students Who Chose Their Career Path

Deciding where to take your life in terms of university education and a career when you are 17 is quite an overwhelming thing that takes a lot of time and effort to figure out. As a student coming from a school with more than 1500 students it’s difficult for the guidance counsellors to really spend a lot of time helping you out. Laura did an excellent job of steering me onto the right path when I felt completely lost. The work we did together helped me recognize my values, maximize my strengths and acknowledge my weaknesses.

After only a few sessions, I was left with all the things I had to consider when choosing my career all on paper right in front of me. Then, Laura helped me research possible careers that matched my values and strengths. Once we found a few careers that felt right, we were able to narrow down the choices. After finding a career that suited me, we then did research on the university degrees that would be necessary for my career choice. Laura then guided me in contacting professionals in the field that I would like to pursue so I could ask them questions.

Through the whole process Laura always had a smile on her face. She is very easy to work with because of her positive attitude and good listening skills. I really appreciated the relaxed environment in which we worked. Laura would give me work to do to point me in the right direction (questionnaires to fill out, little tests on personality and career choice) and I was free to do as much as I could before we met. Laura was very supportive and never pushy; she took on a guidance role which was really helpful! Whether you’re a student coming out of high school or university, or even someone looking for a career change Laura has a lot to offer! I’m very pleased with her help.

Stay-at-Home Parents Who Returned Successfully to the Workforce

I was in the process of going back to work, after staying at home with my son, and working for/with my husband. It had been a while, and it didn’t take long for me to realize that I didn’t have a lot of enthusiasm for doing what I did before, and I had no ideas what I wanted to be when I grew up. Not to mention a complete lack of confidence all around. Then I found Laura. Through a few meetings, she not only really helped me get to the “what I want to be when I grow up” – and how to make that happen, she also helped with the self confidence to go out and find the job I needed “for now”. She helped me see my talents and abilities in a new light, was very encouraging, and made some very practical suggests for how to get where I wanted to go. I would heartily recommend Laura. She was great.
