95% of past clients rated that they were satisfied with the career counselling they received from Calgary Career Counselling.

What kinds of issues does career counselling help with?

Career counselling can help you with the following:

• Choosing your ideal career direction if you are unsure of, unhappy with, or stagnating in your current path.
• Implementing a career transition if you are looking to change direction within the same career or company.
• Deciding what you can do with your degree or if your education can be applied to a particular career.
• Developing your job search strategies, resume, cover letter, and/or interview techniques.

Who are CCC’s clients?

CCC helps people aged 15 – 60+ achieve career satisfaction. Our clients generally fall into four groups:

  1. High school students choosing their career path (aged 15-18). Note that we do not recommend career counselling until a person is 15 years of age.
  2. Post-secondary students (university, college, etc.) who are confused about their career direction.
  3. Adults of all ages thinking of making a career change/transition.
  4. Stay-at-home parents wanting to return to the workforce.
  5. Individuals close to retirement who need some direction in regards to what to do once they retire.

Questions About Our Counsellors

Who are the counsellors?

CCC’s counsellors are Master’s and Ph.D. level Psychologists and career coaches with extensive career experience. Please see the Our Team section for more information about our dynamic team.

Of 350 past clients surveyed, 92% were satisfied or very satisfied with their counsellor.

Is my confidentiality protected?

Psychologists adhere to a strict set of ethical guidelines that focus on our duty to care for clients and provide the best service we can. We are bound by our Code of Ethics to protect your privacy through set rules of confidentiality. All information shared with your Psychologist or career coach is considered privileged and must not be shared by them among third parties without your written consent. As well, all aspects of your participation in psychological services, including the scheduling of appointments, content of counselling sessions, and any records that we keep, are confidential as outlined by the College of Alberta Psychologists.

What can a Registered Psychologist offer?

Registered Psychologists have extensive education and experience, and are experts in helping people achieve their potential. Psychologists are regulated by a governing body and have a Code of Ethics they must abide by. Also, many extended health care/insurance plans offer some coverage for counselling with a Registered Psychologist. For these reasons, working with a Registered Psychologist has some benefits that exceed those offered by general counsellors or career coaches.

Questions About Our Process

What days/times can I book a session?

We offer daytime appointments Monday through Friday, as well as evening appointments on Tuesday through Friday and daytime Saturday appointments. We can typically book an appointment within 1 – 2 weeks.

What happens during a career counselling session?

At CCC we are dedicated to promoting personal growth in a supportive environment. During career counselling we help you identify and understand your unique values, interests, strengths and personality to connect you with your ideal career. Please see the Process section for a detailed outline of what typical sessions look like. That said, each client is unique and we will adapt to your needs and situation to provide the best possible support.

I have already invested substantial time and money in my education, is it too late to benefit from career counselling?

It is never too late to benefit from career counselling. Our goal is to help you find a career that matters to you, motivates you, uses your strengths, and helps you realize your full potential. Our counsellors can help you sort out any questions and concerns you have regarding your education and career goals.

What do I need to do to prepare for my first career counselling session?

We encourage you to bring your most recent resume. You may also want to think about what questions you have and what goals you would like to achieve through career counselling.

How many career counselling sessions will I require to complete the process?

On average, clients take 5 – 7 sessions to work through the process. Depending on your timeline and budget, the process can take as little as 6 weeks (or less in special circumstances), or as long as 3 or more months.

How long is each session?

Sessions are scheduled for one hour. You will spend 50 minutes with the psychologist and the last 10 minutes are used for assigning homework, processing payment, and scheduling your next session.

What types of tests or assessments are used in career counselling?

CCC has several types of assessments that we use to help facilitate the career counselling process. Our Psychologists administer and interpret tests provided by Psychometrics Canada and SHL, which may include:

  1. MBTI (various formats depending on client requirements).
  2. Strong Interest and Skills Inventory (various reports depending on client needs).
  3. Career Values Scale
  4. Work Personality Inventory
  5. Career Interest Profiler
  6. Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode
  7. FIRO-B
  8. CPI-260
  9. Stress Profile
  10. Occupational Personality Index (OPQ)
  11. Motivation Questionnaire (MQ)

Can career counselling be covered by my extended health care/insurance plan?

Yes, some of our clients have coverage through their (or their partner’s or parent’s) health benefit plans such as Alberta Blue Cross, Sun Life, etc. These plans cover counselling with a Registered Psychologist in general, regardless of specific issue (the specific issue is always confidential). So when looking at the plan look for the term Registered Psychologist and counselling, not specifically “career”.

How much does career counselling cost?

We would be happy to speak with you to discuss our sessions and package options. We do not publish our prices online as we find it easier to explain our services and various costs to you over the phone, at which time we can hear about what you are looking for and determine if our services are a fit.

How successful is career counselling?

CCC has a very high success rate of helping individuals make successful career choices if they follow the process through to completion. However, success is different for every client; some make a big change, some a small change, and some no change at all because they are able to validate that the career they are in is a good fit for them. We tailor our process to each individual client and make sure to ask all of our clients what they want to achieve, using this as a way to measure client success. We also collect evaluations from many of our clients to ensure the process is working successfully and to continually improve our services. Please see our Testimonials section to read about some of CCC’s client success stories.

The majority of our clients reported only being 40% clear about their career direction prior to starting career counselling. Upon completion of the counselling process, this increased substantially to an 80-90% rate of clarity in career direction.

Will CCC help me find a job?

CCC supports you in all aspects of your career planning, from helping you determine your career path to implementing your plan. We can help point you in the right direction for your job search, but we are not a search firm and do not link people with specific job postings. We can recommend firms that can help for that purpose.

What is involved in the free consultation?

CCC offers a free 15-minute phone or face-to-face consultation if you would like to learn more about our career counselling process and speak with or meet one of CCC’s Psychologists or career coaches at our office. Most clients feel that a phone consultation gives them enough confidence to book their first session, but we welcome potential clients to visit our office as well.

What other services does CCC offer?

CCC offers Education Advising and Job Search Strategies services to help you with any questions regarding post-secondary education or training programs. Please see our Education Advising and Job Search Strategies sections for a detailed description of these services. We also offer Career Transition services to help companies support their employees. This can be for Career Outplacement services or Retirement Career Planning. We can also assist with other Workplace Issues, helping you strategize for work success by navigating politics, communicating effectively, and giving/receiving feedback. We also have psychologists equipped to deal with Emotional Challenges, such as depression, anxiety, stress, and low self-esteem through Synthesis Psychology.
