Supporting Loved Ones Through Career Transitions

February 22, 2017

Since February is the month of Valentine’s Day and Family Day, it seems like a fitting time to reflect on how we can
support our loved ones through career transitions. Just like other major life changes, career shifts are often emotional and intense.

Though your loved one is the one making the career change, you will be impacted by the transition as well. Your support can make a big difference and will be appreciated.

Here are some tips to consider when supporting your loved one through a career transition:

  1. Take care of yourself: whenever flying, we are reminded of the importance of donning our own oxygen mask before assisting others with theirs. The same principle applies here. You will be able to support your loved one best if you are taking care of yourself. Ensure you are getting proper sleep, nutrition, and exercise.
  2. Encourage balance: helping your loved one to take breaks from career planning for fun activities can rejuvenate them so that they are feeling energized and creative when they return to career planning.
  3. Give positive feedback: some words of encouragement or praise can go a long way when your loved one is going through a career transition. Keep in mind that this is likely a vulnerable time for him or her. More specifically, he or she will be engaging in self-exploration and dealing with ambiguity as well as potential impacts to confidence and sense of purpose / self-worth.
  4. Ask for help when needed: know your limitations. If you are feeling overwhelmed with supporting your loved one, don’t be afraid to ask friends, family, and mental health professionals for support. You can get help for your loved one as well as yourself from these sources.

These are just a few ideas to get you started. Best of luck with supporting your loved one through their career transition and let us know if we can help!
