Is 2017 the Year You Make a Change?

January 4, 2017

Instead of a New Year’s resolution, why not make 2017 the year for your New Year’s REVOLUTION? If you have not been happy in your career for some time now — and your dissatisfaction goes deeper than a few adjustments or tweaks in your work situation — perhaps it’s time to make a change. Whether it’s a change in workplace or a complete career overhaul, here are a few key areas to get you started:

*

Ask yourself, “If I could do anything, what would I do?” Write out a “day in the life” of your ideal career and lifestyle. Let yourself dream.

Be clear about what doesn’t work for you. You know what it’s like to be in a career or workplace that doesn’t feel meaningful or in alignment with who you are. Use that information to paint the picture of what WILL work for you. We might not know exactly what we want, but we can use what we don’t want as a starting place.

What fires you up? Is there an issue or social problem that you feel passionate about? Pay attention to where your opinions are strongest and see if there’s a call-to-action there for you.

If you aren’t ready to make a change but want to start the wheels moving, think about volunteering in an area you’re considering working in. Not only will you make great connections and build your network, but you will get a sense of the career and industry.

*

Making a change is not easy! Even considering that your life might look different takes tremendous courage. We are here to help if you need someone to support you through the transition and identify what that next step looks like or what future career is calling you. You deserve a fulfilling career and can make it happen!

What Can Career Counselling Do?

Career counselling with a Registered Psychologist or Career Coach is an excellent way to make career decisions and find a fulfilling career direction. The process of career counselling includes personality, interest and values assessments, and coaching sessions to ensure you find the right career path for you. All career counsellors at Calgary Career Counselling are Master’s- and Ph.D.-level Psychologists and Career Coaches with extensive experience helping people reach their full potential.

We’re a private organization offering fee-based services, but many extended health plans cover Registered Psychologists. Further, we regularly donate our time to helping those in need with career planning presentations and individual career counselling. Our current relationships include The Calgary Women’s Immigrant Association and Discovery House.
