Your Career in Review: How to Prepare for 2018

December 30, 2017

As 2018 beings, take some time to reflect on where things stand with your career. What projects did you work on? What wins did you have? What needs to be completed? While many of us prefer not to dwell on the past, looking back can help you look forward. Here are a few tips to bring 2017 to a successful close.

  1. Get rid of clutter. Clear your desk. Wrap up loose ends. Finish that project you have been procrastinating on. Clean out your inbox. Make room for 2018 and it will feel like a breath of fresh air.
  2. Write down your accomplishments. Spend some time to reflect on your wins this year. Try and write down 5 – 10. This will help you when it is time to update your resume, and will also help your storytelling during interviews.
  3. Reach out to your connections. Making contact with people who may have fallen off your radar can be awkward. What better way to open those doors than the holiday season? Reach out to your network and wish them the best in the coming year.
  4. Revamp your professional brand. Update your resume and add the accomplishments from your “wins” list above that you wrote down. Find a new, stylish template and don’t be afraid to start over. Take a look at your LinkedIn profile. Is it complete? How about your website? Have you been wanting to re-design your business cards? Now is the time.
  5. Create goals. What do you hope to accomplish in 2018? Taking your dream vacation? A promotion? A new job? Learning a new skill? Signing up for that program or course that will move you to the next level in your career? Write your goals down and then post them in places that you see daily to help you keep them in sight.
  6. Express your gratitude. There is so much to be grateful for and it seems gratitude is becoming a lost art. Are there people who have helped you along the way this year? Mentored you in some way? Gave you a stellar reference? Recommended you on LinkedIn? Inspired you? Let them know. This is another great way to either open a door or help keep it open.

If you read this and think that six things to do are five too many at this busy time of year, then consider number 6 and spend some time expressing your gratitude. There isn’t much that feels better than sharing your appreciation with someone—for them and for you. Strengthening your relationships could be the thing that moves your career in a new direction.

Our team at Calgary Career Counselling wishes you a truly magical holiday season and a bright, successful New Year!
